Burne Hogarth was an American artist best known for his Tarzan graphic novels and his figure drawing books. In his book Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery: Solutions for Drawing the Clothed Figure, Hogarth shows what’s behind folds and wrinkles and categorizes them into different types of patterns. These patterns can be grouped by they dynamic forces that create them.

Drawing fabric is really important to learn if you want to sketch, draw, or paint people because there aren’t many nudes walking around. Understanding the human form that lies beneath the clothes is important because that’s what hold up or stretches or compresses the fabric but often its only the clothes that you see on the final drawing. Understanding the interplay between the body below and the fabric on top is what Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery does such a good job explaining.

Hogarth is an excellent draftsman with an effective system to conceptualize the human figure. Some people get caught up in his distinctive style, but you should focus on learning the concepts he’s teaching and apply it to your own drawing style.
