Harry Carmean is a master figure artist, sometimes classified as a Romantic Mannerist. He composes in a classical and mannerist style (among other influences) but uses modern color and style in his paintings. He was also an influential teacher at Art Center College of Design from 1952 through 1996.

His paintings almost always focus on the human form and he chooses subjects that range from everyday family scenes to more theatric dancers and acrobats. His drawings demonstrate his bold and confident line and his knowledge on the human form.

Carmean continues to draw and paint from his home in Santa Barbara, California.
