Chuck Amuck is a great autobiography of Chuck Jones, the iconic animator behind many of the Warner Brothers characters. In this book, and the sequel Chuck Reducks, he tells stories of his life and his experiences with fellow animators and writers who created the iconic characters.
Often funny but always revealing, he tells stories behind the stories. We get to see the inspiration for his take on the characters and his relationships with the other people who worked on the animated shorts.
I read this book several years ago but I still remember being surprised how his own personal biography played into his characters and stories. It was also fun to read how Bugs Bunny developed through several animators before Chuck Jones put his unique stamp on the character.
This book isn’t all just biography (though it’s certainly interesting reading about how artists put their life and experience into their work). It also touches on art technique and film making as well. If you’re interested in how the iconic Warner Brothers characters were created or interested in animation then this book is a fun read.
